Classification of teams is by nature a subjective process. It is imperative to the integrity of the USSSA system that managers are honest in their classification of their team’s ability. No team may register at a classification lower than the previous year without permission from the state office. Guidelines for classfication are as follows:
Major: Teams represent the top 10% of teams in their respective age groups. These teams power rankings as reported by USSSA will be among the top in the area.
AAA: Teams are below the talent of Major teams yet still better than 50% of the teams in that age group. these teams power rankings will be high but lower than the top few teams n the region.
AA: Team represent the lower 50% of the teams in that age group.
Honesty in Classification will produce the most competitive tournaments. Directors will constantly evaluate and reevaluate classification of teams. Every effort will be made to keep teams in their most competitive classification. Please remember that a team consistently losing games by one or two runs are compettive. All requests for reclassification or challenges to state office decisions will only be considered after a team has played in two USSSA sanctioned tournaments. Teams with 5 or more returning players are considered the same team. The fact that manager, team name or sponsor has changed does not affect the consideration of that being the same team as the previous season for classification purposes.
